Once you have painted your garage it will become part of your everyday life, therefore pays to do a few simple searches to ensure you are making the right decision in choosing the most suitable epoxy coating contractor for your family home.

To guarantee the best service, we recommend completing the following checklist below. Finding these qualities in a contractor can you give the assurance of receiving the best value for your hard-earned money or investment.

Do complete background checks of contractors

  • Read their online reviews and ensure the quality of the reviews are correct
  • Check their company and ABN details against their website – are they being honest about how long they have been operating?
  • Look at their website/project photos to see if their photos are genuine and not just taken from stock photos easily found online
  • Ask for any local references, then call them to check on the quality of their work and the performance of their products
  • If possible, inspect one or a few of their jobs that are more than 6 months old since, unfortunately, most jobs look the same when they are first completed and it can take about 2 – 6 months for the coating to show any signs of failure. This is a key factor in determining the quality of the floor as photos can be easily manipulated to look better online

Some contractors tend to do anything to quote the job low, so they can secure the work, however, a low quote only means that shortcuts are taken to ensure they are making a profit on the job. Here is a list of common shortcuts:

  • Poor or no preparation – Preparation is the most important key for any successful coating system. Poor prep is the biggest factor in an epoxy floor system’s failure. The most suitable preparation method for an epoxy coating is diamond grinding to remove any existing coatings/dirt from the top layer of your concrete.
  • Use of low-quality or cheap imported epoxies –  a proper company should list what product they will be applying and you can ask for Technical Datasheets to see if the product is suitable for your floor.
  • Applying thin layers – adding thinners or water, will increase product coverage but reduce the quality of the finish.
  • Not patching any cracks and holes – you should expect your finished floor to be free of any holes, concrete spalls and imperfections – all joint edges must be repaired and sealed with a FLOOR Joint sealant – wall joint sealants are cheaper and they never cure hard and rubbish will stick to them
  • Not levelling and smoothing the surface – if you look at their work carefully and notice any dips, uneven surfaces or roller marks you should be wary. This IS NOT the expected behaviour of a proper premium quality system. 100% Solids Epoxies may cost more than your average epoxies however they will provide a smooth and elegant finish as the product applied to your floor has self-level properties

A reasonable epoxy system should last at least 5 years before it shows any signs of wear and tear.

It is always best to check their warranty policy to ensure you are covered for any unexpected product issues or workmanship errors and cross-check it with their reviews.

Most products available in the market are not low VOC and cause harm to your family and our environment

Ask for their product’s technical data sheets to know all the information regarding the system being installed.
